Why Cultural Competence Is Important

Health care services that are respectful of and responsive to the beliefs and needs of diverse patients can help bring about positive health outcomes. Cultural competence permits patients and doctors to talk about health concerns without the hindrance of cultural differences.

National Standards on Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS)

Health care organizationsand individual providers are encouraged to use the CLAS standards to make their practices more culturally and linguistically accessible.
