You and the Common Cold

Facts about the common cold:

  • Colds are caused by viruses that get into your nose and throat.
  • There are two hundred or more different viruses that cause the symptoms we describe as a cold.
  • On average, children get six to 10 colds a year, and adults get two to three.
  • Prevent a cold by washing your hands frequently with soap and water, and by not touching your nose and eyes.
  • Avoid spreading a cold by covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, preferably with a tissue.
