Physiology, Pathophysiolgy
In the study of all aspects of emergency medical care, providers must learn what is normal before they can detect abnormalities. They must also understand basic human physiology (how the body functions under normal circumstances) to aid them in the assessment of patients. This knowledge will enable them to distinguish changes in the body’s functions in the presence of pathophysiology (disease or injury). This section discusses probable causes of common assessment findings in order to choose effective treatments.
Team Management
Team management forms a crucial part of a paramedic's job. Providers are familiar with many aspects of EMS operations through their prior work as EMTs. They must repeatedly reinforce operational procedures to ensure the safety of EMS providers, patients, and bystanders. The time to review these procedures is not during high-stress emergency situations. Instead the procedures must come as second nature, which means constant practice and teamwork.
