Cardiovascular Health Program

Cardiovascular disease (CVD), including heart disease and stroke, is the leading cause of death in Mississippi, accounting for 10,223, or 36% of all deaths in 2006.

Twenty-four percent of these deaths occurred to Mississippians under the age of 65. Mississippi's CVD mortality rate is the highest in the nation, with a mortality rate for heart disease 38% higher and cerebrovascular deaths 20% higher than the rest of the U.S. as of 2004.


The Program

The Mississippi Cardiovascular Health Program has received funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) since September 1998.
