Cancer is Mississippi's #2 killer.
In 2004, Mississippi ranked fourth in cancer mortality in the U.S. Each year
almost 15,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed; over 6,000 die from it.
What is Comprehensive Cancer Control?
NEW: Funding Opportunities
MP3C Mission
The mission of the MP3C is to reduce the human suffering and economic burden from cancer for Mississippi's
citizens by developing, implementing and evaluating a comprehensive cancer control plan.
Goals
- Establish a statewide system for comprehensive cancer control in Mississippi.
- Develop a coordinated response to the excessive cancer burden in Mississippi using data and input from interested citizens of MS.
- Identify and prioritize strategies for implementing the state comprehensive cancer control plan.
Comprehensive Cancer Control (CCC) is a collaborative process
through which a community pools resources to reduce the burden of
cancer that results in risk reduction, early detection, better treatment,
and enhanced survivorship. These efforts encourage healthy lifestyles,
promote recommended cancer screening guidelines and tests,
increase access to quality cancer care, and improve quality of life for
cancer survivors.
Why is it important?
The fight against cancer will not be won without a comprehensive approach. While the number of cancer prevention and
control programs has multiplied in Mississippi and elsewhere, it has become obvious that duplication
of effort and missed opportunities occur when organizations and individuals confine themselves to specific cancers.
By working together, however, we can join the ranks of other states that have developed and implemented statewide,
comprehensive cancer control plans.
What can be done?
- Pass meaningful legislation in our state that helps prevent cancer, and promote better access to medical care for
detection and treatment.
- Educate the public on the importance of early detection of cancer.
- Work with businesses and industry to adopt smoke-free business policies and provide resources to help employees
quit smoking.
- Ensure that adequate patient support services are available and accessible for cancer patients and their
families.
- Institute more effective health education policies in Mississippi's schools.
- Join the Mississippi Partnership for Comprehensive Cancer Control to implement a plan that will
address these and other cancer-related issues.
About Cancer
Basic Cancer Facts
- 60% of all cancers are preventable.
- About one-third of cancer deaths are linked to lifestyle factors (nutrition, physical activity, obesity), and could be prevented.
- Regular screening exams can result in early detection and treatment of cancers of the breast, colon, rectum, cervix, prostate, testis, oral cavity and skin.
- Everyone is at risk of developing cancer, but especially older adults. About 77% of all cancers are diagnosed at 55 and older.
