Death in the Family
Living Will (Advance Directive for Health Care)
Many people worry about being kept on life support artificially when they have no quality of life left. The old Living will statute has been repealed. The current statute is the Patient Self Determination Act. This act authorizes a Power of Attorney for Health Care which allows another person to act for you in health care decisions when you are unable to act for yourself. More information .
Organ Donation
Organ donation allows families to continue the gift of life on behalf of their loved one.
Most hospitals and the Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency can provide information.
Death certificates
Death certificates are usually provided by funeral directors at the request of families.
Certificates can also be obtained directly from the Vital Records Office. For a death which occurred in another state, write to the Vital Records Office in that state.
Notification
Every organization from which the deceased was receiving benefits/money should be notified as soon as possible. Social Security Administration has a toll free number, 800.772.1213.
What to do when a Beneficiary Dies
Financial Assistance
Social Security Administration offers a death benefit currently $255 payable to the survivor. Social Security also pays survivors benfits. Survivors benefits booklet. Veterans can get special help from the DAV.
