Cervical Cancer Facts

  About cervical cancer

  • Dozens of Mississippi women died each year from cervical cancer.
  • Cervical cancer is preventable. Regular testing can reveal the early signs of cervical cancer.
  • With early detection, the disease has a much greater chance of being successfully treated.

Your risk of getting cervical cancer is higher if:

  • You have a history of sexually-transmitted diseases.
  • You smoke.
  • You eat a high-fat diet.
  • You have multiple sex partners.
  • You have sexual intercourse at an early age.

  Cervical cancer is preventable.

  • Cervical cancer develops slowly and has no obvious symptoms.
  • Getting a yearly Pap test is essential for all women in order to detect the disease early enough for treatment.
  • High-risk women should have a Pap test once a year. Pap tests detect early changes to the cervix that may be signs of cervical cancer.
  • All women should have a Pap test performed within three years of becoming sexually active, or by the age of 21.
  • The MDH Breast and Cervical Cancer Program offers free cancer screenings to those who qualify. Contact us toll-free for details: 1-866-458-4948.

You can now be vaccinated against the chief cause of cervical cancer.
