Victor D. Sutton is the Director of the Office of Preventive Health with the Mississippi State Department of Health. As Director of the Office of Preventive Health, Sutton manages several bureaus: Health Education, which consists of Injury & Violence Prevention, Chronic Disease, Tobacco Prevention and Community & School Health. Before becoming the Office Director, Sutton was the Director of the Bureau of Health Education. There his duties included management of the division's activities at the state level; networking with program counterparts in other states and federal funding agencies; direct planning; implementation; evaluation of all programmatic grants; directing the expenditure and accounting of multiple categorical funds in accordance with grantor; budgeting and fiscal accounting; planning/development of expanding and emerging programs; and community-based interventions.
Sutton previously worked with the Department of Human Services, Office of Children and Youth, serving Mississippi children. He has also worked with the New York State Department of Labor as well as in several capacities with non-profit organizations. He served as the Director for the Community Organization for Health Awareness (COHA); while in this capacity, he worked with at-risk children recently released from the justice system by creating a mentoring network to address issues of health and education.
Sutton has over a decade of work experience in state government and has received numerous awards and honors for his professional endeavors. He has also served as an Adjunct Professor with Troy Junior College in Albany, NY. His research interests are numerous: leadership, cardiovascular health, obesity, disparities, physical activity, community-based corrections, and community and economic development.
